BGCDSB Successfully Acquires Land for New High School in Owen Sound

This significant development paves the way for the construction of a new secondary school with space for 1,012 students, easing accommodation pressures in Owen Sound.

Following the successful application for Capital Priorities funding in April 2022, which has since been increased to $36 million, the BGCDSB formed a dedicated site selection committee. After a thorough evaluation of over 14 potential locations within Owen Sound, a property was identified that meets the ministry’s acreage requirements, is fully serviceable, accessible, and aligns with the City of Owen Sound’s long-term development plans.

The Board is pleased to confirm that the acquisition of this land has now been finalized.

Lori Di Castri, Chair of the Board, expressed her excitement, saying, "This is a truly wonderful day for BGCDSB and the families of Owen Sound and surrounding areas. The significant overcrowding at our current high school has been an ongoing concern for a number of years, and the acquisition of this land represents a very tangible step toward a long-term solution. We are confident that this new location for our high school will serve our expanding student population exceptionally well."

Karyn Bruneel, Director of Education, added, "The acquisition of this land paves the way for an exceptional educational opportunity for our students. This new, modern secondary school will offer innovative, creative, and sacred learning spaces where students can truly thrive, explore their passions, and be empowered to shape a successful future. We look forward to embarking on the next phase of this vital project, working in close partnership with the Ministry of Education and our valued community."

“Securing this land represents a momentous step forward for the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board and the entire Owen Sound community," affirmed Alecia Lantz, Executive Superintendent of Business & Treasurer for BGCDSB. "This acquisition empowers us to advance our shared vision of providing our students with a modern, state-of-the-art learning environment, thoughtfully equipped with the resources they need to flourish academically, spiritually, and personally. This new high school will serve as a vibrant hub for our students, dedicated staff, and the broader community, fostering innovation, collaboration, and growth."

“Our government is focused on supporting students, teachers, and parents while ensuring school boards are equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education. “Once completed, this project will offer an inspiring learning environment that helps students prepare for the jobs of tomorrow. Our government will continue to provide the resources students need for ultimate achievement.”

BGCDSB is committed to providing quality Catholic education and views this new high school as a significant investment in the future of Owen Sound. The facility will provide enhanced academic programming, expanded extracurricular opportunities, and serve as a vibrant hub for community engagement. With the land now secured, the Board will begin the next phase of the project, including architectural planning and continued collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the local community.
