Our Heart & Home
OUR HEART & HOME
My leadership at our Board is guided by a vision that extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of our mission as a Catholic community. This vision is rooted in our Pastoral Plan, which serves as my compass for how we live out the Gospel in the modern world.
I see our students leading the way in expressing this vision through powerful social justice and ecological advocacy projects. From local food drives to environmental stewardship that cares for our common home, these projects are the living fruits of our Pastoral Plan.
To ensure our schools remain deeply anchored, I have partnered with the Deanery and the Hamilton Diocese to facilitate "Conversations in the Spirit." Every school is now working directly with their Parish Priest to implement a new school-parish activity, strengthening the triad of Parish, Home, and School.
By fostering these high levels of interaction among school and parish leaders, the organizing team and I model a leadership style driven by a shared sense of responsibility for our system's spiritual health. These efforts ensure that when we speak of "Unity," it is more than just a word, it is a lived experience felt across every school and parish in our board. I also attend our local Deanery meetings alongside Superintendent Bilodeau to continue our ongoing collaboration in providing high quality Catholic education.
The People Behind the Promise
At BGCDSB, I believe our greatest resource is our people. Just as we nurture the spirit of our community through synodality, I am equally intentional about nurturing the dignity of the staff who call this board home. When we speak of "Our Heart & Home," we are talking about the deliberate way we build and nurture our team. I believe that every staff member plays a vital role in the spiritual and academic life of our students, and that starts with a workplace rooted in respect, equity, and the Gospel.
A Culture of Accompaniment over Judgment
Building a healthy and inclusive workplace is an ongoing journey of learning and unlearning. This past fall, our entire staff engaged in Unconscious Bias training, beginning with a powerful keynote speaker and followed by a monitored module. I recognize that judgment often stems from these hidden biases, and a key part of our collective work is the deliberate unlearning of those impulses. In our Catholic tradition, we are called instead to follow Christ’s model of accompaniment: the practice of walking alongside our students, families, and colleagues on their unique journeys with grace rather than judgment. This winter, we strengthened this foundation as all staff completed the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) training modules.
Learning and Unlearning Toward Reconciliation
This same dedication to learning and unlearning is at the heart of my commitment to Reconciliation. In partnership with the Saugeen and Nawash First Nations, our system Consultants and Coaches work "shoulder-to-shoulder" with our staff to learn and unlearn. This collaborative model allows our educators to deepen their understanding of First Nations culture, language, and history in a way that is both authentic and sensitive. By equipping our staff with these tools, we ensure they can provide culturally responsive education and sensitive support to our students, ensuring everyone feels they truly belong in our "Home."
Strategic Alignment
Nurturing Faith: The "Conversations in the Spirit" and the new school-parish activities provide clear evidence of the Director nurturing communities of faith and implementing the board's Pastoral Plan.
Accountability: Progress on these spiritual goals is shared with the Board of Trustees to ensure our Catholic culture remains at the forefront of our system.
Culture of Dignity: System-wide completion of Unconscious Bias and OHRC training demonstrates a commitment to a workplace grounded in fair practices and the Dignity of the Human Person.
Spirit of Accompaniment: Modeling Christ-centered leadership by choosing "accompaniment over judgment" fosters a culture of wellness and belonging for all staff and students.
Parish-School Bonds: Partnering with the Deanery and the Bishop to strengthen the "Triad" of Home-School-Parish fulfills the Director's goal of sustaining vibrant faith communities.
Visible Leadership: The Director’s active participation in synodal gatherings and Senior Team presence in schools during social justice and ecological projects ensures leadership is visible, responsive, and modeling Gospel values.
