The Learning Journey
THE LEARNING JOURNEY
At the core of our board’s work is a simple, powerful promise: to ensure every student has the tools, the support, and the confidence to reach their full potential. This promise is given life through our Board Student Achievement Plan (BSAP). Rather than a static document on a shelf, the BSAP is our living roadmap—a collection of deliberate actions and evidence-based strategies we are implementing that guide our educators from Kindergarten through Graduation.
This plan is a collaborative effort. Our Superintendents work closely with school leaders to ensure that the goals set at the system level are felt in the desks of our students. This year, our focus has been sharpened in two critical areas: Foundational Literacy and Foundational Math mastery.
Success in Literacy: The "Lexia" Impact
We believe that reading is the gateway to all other learning. This year, we integrated Lexia, an adaptive literacy program that was previously used at targeted grade levels, across all of our K–8 classrooms to support reading. I am thrilled to share that the results have been nothing short of inspiring. Since the beginning of the school year, we have seen a 24% increase in the number of students working at or above their grade level in reading. This gain isn't just a statistic; it represents hundreds of students who are gaining the confidence to explore new worlds through text.
Numeracy and the MAAP
Our commitment to excellence in Mathematics is equally prioritized. I am proud to share that the Board of Trustees recently endorsed our 2025/2026 Math Achievement Action Plan (MAAP). This plan focuses on evidence-based instructional practices: explicit instruction, retrieval practice, and data-based instructional decision-making. This means that our teachers are using methods that are scientifically proven to help all students grasp complex concepts more deeply. From our system-wide EQAO Math Night on February 24th to classroom-level SpringMath screening and intervention, we are ensuring that Math is seen as a hurdle, but as a language of logic and opportunity.
By grounding our work in the BSAP, we ensure that every decision—from the professional development our teachers receive to the technology in our classrooms—is aimed at one thing: the success of the students we are so privileged to serve.
Growing Together: Professional Development & Reconciliation
The "Learning Journey" applies to our staff as much as our students. Our system Coaches and Consultants provide ongoing, shoulder-to-shoulder professional development in our schools to ensure our teaching practices are current and effective.
This staff development is enriched by our Indigenous Education Action Plan. We are honoured to work alongside our First Nations partners from Saugeen and Nawash. Their wisdom and guidance help us help our educators weave Indigenous perspectives into the curriculum authentically. By learning together, we ensure that our schools are places where the history, culture, and rights of Indigenous peoples are respected and celebrated, moving us forward on our shared path of Reconciliation.
Strategic Alignment
Measurable Gains: The 24% surge in literacy levels is direct evidence of the commitment to academic growth and provincial priorities.
Collaborative Planning: Our BSAP and MAAP are developed interactively between the Director’s office, superintendents, and system leaders.
Preparing for the Future: Investing in foundational skills and innovative tools like Lexia and Spring Math ensures students are prepared for future success.
Actions toward Reconciliation: Partnering with Saugeen and Nawash First Nations to provide staff professional development is part of our ongoing commitment to the Board Action Plan for Indigenous Education and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
Ministry Alignment: The MAAP and BSAP are in full compliance with Ontario Regulation 224/23, aligning our local work with provincial education standards.
