Roots of Bruce

April 3 & 4, 2008

On Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4, 2008 twenty Sacred Heart High School students were needed to assist at the Roots of Bruce. The Roots of Bruce was held at the Walkerton Agricultural Buildings, provided an interactive learning program for grade 5 and 6 students from Bruce County. The high school students would aid the local commodity food groups and agriculture-related industry with their presentations to the elementary students. No farm experience was needed and training was provided.

Commodity groups that requested volunteers included: Beekeeping, Bruce County 4H Clubs, Dairy, Farm Safety, Grey-Bruce Health, Woodlot Management, Maple Syrup, Poultry, Potatoes, Pumpkins & Vegetables, Soil & Crop.

Students were able to choose to volunteer for a half day, a full day, 2 half days, or 2 full days. Students received a school sponsored absence and had to inform their teachers of their planned absence ahead of time. Students were responsible for the work they had missed during the class time.
