Men Capture CWOSSA and BAATitles!
Crusaders Capture the 2006-07 CWOSSA and BAA Championships.
The Sacred Heart Crusaders Senior Boys hockey team completed their
2006-2007 season. The team advanced to
CWOSSAA, earning the berth on BAA playoff wins over Grey
Highlands of Flesherton and Peninsula Shores of Wiarton by
identical 7-1 scores. They defeated Kincardine in the BAA finals
to win the local crown.
They traveled to the CWOSSAA championships in
Palmerston on March 7th- 8th. The first game saw the Crusaders
playing Norwell Secondary of Palmerston. The game went to
overtime, where the Crusaders came out on top 3-2. Goals came
from Tyler Kuntz (2) and Mitch Dentinger (1), with assists going
to Conor Gill. Their second game was against Port Dover
Composite and was equally as exciting as their first game. A
shootout was needed to determine a winner and again the
Crusaders came out on top 6-4, with strong goaltending from Tyler
Tilker. Goals came from Gill (2), Dentinger (2), Kuntz and Matt
Thompson.
The Crusaders strong play earned them a spot in the
championship game, played the following day against defending
OFSAA champs, Bishop Macdonell of Guelph. The team put forth
their strongest effort of the season, eventually winning the game
8-5. Kuntz led the scoring with 4 goals, as well as Dentinger (2),
Tristen Flachs (1) and Pat O’Connell (1), with assists to
Thompson and Gill.
The CWOSSAA victory earned the crusaders an OFSAA
berth, in Oshawa on March 21st-24th. Their first game of the
tournament saw the Crusaders playing the second seated team,
Stouffville. The Crusaders put forth a lackluster effort and were
shutout 4-0. This put the pressure on, requiring them to win their
next two games to advance from their pool. They did just that,
playing two very focused and intense games. The first victory
was over Dennis O’Connor, by a score of 3-2. The second came
by a 2-1 margin over Timmins. Solid goaltending from Tilker and
great defending were big factors in both wins. Goals for the
Crusaders came from Kuntz (3), Dentinger (1) and Gill (1).
Finishing second in the Pool, the team advanced to the
quarter-finals in which they were to play their rivals, Bishop
Macdonell. Despite a great team effort, Bishop Mac proved to be
too much, blanking the Crusaders 3-0. It was a great tournament
and a valuable experience, as everyone on the team represented
the school well.
It was a sucessful year which saw the team achieve all
the goals they set at the beginning of the season. On behalf of
the team, a special thanks goes to Mr. Orr and Mr. Hambrock for
their efforts and dedication to coaching throughout the year, as
well as to the school community for their support.
