Safe Schools

"Bullying is a serious social problem afflicting schools
and research indicates that it is pervasive in Canada."
Craig & Pepler 2003

The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board is being proactive in its attempt to address the issue of bullying behaviour within its schools. There are several reasons why the Board decided to address the problem of bullying behaviour.

Bullying behaviours contradict the Gospel values, which are centred in the teachings of Christ.

Bullying may contribute to a negative school climate, which interferes with spiritual development, academic learning, and social responsibility.

Providing support and resources is crucial to establishing a safe, positive, learning environment.

A committee was established, representing both elementary and secondary panels, administration, support staff, trustees, and community partners. In addressing this issue the committee recognized the need to address the broader sphere of prevention, intervention, and discipline focusing on both the perpetrator and the victim through a process of consultation with principals, individual school staffs, and school councils.

As a result of this process the following initiatives were established:

Amendment of the Safe School Policy

A contact person for each school

Designated October as Safe School Month

Resource Package created for each school
