On June 2, 2011 St. Mary’s High School of Owen Sound had 225 students, staff and volunteers participate in their first ever Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life.
The school had survivors walk the first lap and raised $10,000. St. Mary’s also had Theresa Kocher and student Forrest Brooks at the Relay to shave their heads for Cops for Cancer. Together they raised $2,950! The grand total amount raised by the teams participating in the Relay For Life was an incredible $11,571.62!
Teams began to walk the Victoria Park track at 9:am and were responsible to insure that a member was walking at all times until closing ceremonies at 9:30pm. Throughout the day students camped out in tent city and participated in various activities such as: collecting a bead for each lap of the track, soccer games, themed laps and water balloon games.
Later in the evening the Luminary Ceremony took place where candles were placed around the track and lit at dusk to commemorate survivors and those who have lost their lives to cancer. The remaining Luminaries will be posted throughout the school to remind St. Mary’s students of the hope we have shared.
The day was a great success and St. Mary’s Student Council looks forward to partnering up with the Canadian Cancer Society next year for another fantastic event.
