English as a Second Language
BGCDSB welcomes students that are learning English as an additional language!
If your child’s first language is a language other than English, please be sure to communicate this information during registration. Being bilingual or multilingual is a gift and blessing! Here at BGCDSB we honour our students' gifts, talents and cultural experiences and value the importance of our students using their first language during the school day. Please continue to speak, read and write with your child in your language.
Continuing to use your language has many benefits:
- continues to build literacy in the first language of the child
- reinforces concepts learned at school
- encourages ongoing communication between the child and parents
- strengthens the child’s cultural identity
